A ‘Digipoint’ (Digipunt in Dutch) is a public computer room where people can refine their digital skills. Ghent has some 70 of these Digipoints, which come in three variants:
– locations where people can use a pc and internet connexion free of charge;
– locations where a coach is on call to answer individual questions free of charge;
– locations where people can follow digital trainings.
Many Digipoints combine all three of these functions. More than half have coaches or offer trainings.
Digipoints are mainly situated in city or welfare services locations such community libraries, open houses, social welfare centres and local service centres. Additional venues are available at independent non-profit organisations, such as thrift stores or leisure facilities.
Digitaal.Talent@Gent coordinates the project, provides train-the-trainer programmes to all the coaches (about 100, mainly volunteers) and handles city-wide communication. Digipolis is responsible for qualitative support to Digipoints’ hardware, software and internet.
